Being South African, and into bikes, I was really pleased to see this on the inhabitat website.
It seems to me that these photos really highlight the whole way that a bike can become an extension of a person. You’d be fairly close to discovering my character from a good hard look at my bike. But I also like to keep in mind that it is only a bike, an extension not the essence of my identity, which I think is captured very nicely in the pictures.
I love to see people really using their bikes, putting as much stuff on them as possible and giving them a run for their money. That is the way many people treat their bikes all over Africa and indeed in many countries around the world. I look forward to seeing more and more outlandish designs and uses for them as we really start to embrace their versatility here.
So for beautiful portraits of people with bikes, have a look here: http://inhabitat.com/2010/09/08/stunning-portraits-of-south-african-bicyclists/
